Which social media platform is best for my company

Which social media platform is best for your company? Clients often tell me they find it difficult to decide. Golden rule: don’t just do what everybody else does. Find out where your clients hangs out and how they communicate.

Dutch below.

The first hint

One of my customers was on Linkedin and Twitter, but had a hard time finding and connecting with potential customers. When I asked her which platform(s) her audience prefers to use, she answered she didn’t really know.

Her customers were outdoor (sport) brands, travel agencies specialized in outdoor vacations and companies specialized in outdoor activities. This was the first hint: for these companies it is really important they can bring across a feeling to their customers. So, they use Instagram, Pinterest, travelblog sites. None of them were active on Linkedin and Twitter.

Why her strong focus on Linkedin and Twitter then? Because she heard through the grapevine that these were the must-do platforms if she wanted to be seen as a professional. And she saw one of her ideal clients post recruitment post for a new team member. But finding a new team member is not the same as selling climbing gear and thus selling the feeling of adventure. And hearsays are not facts.

When someone gives you advise don’t just copy and paste. They might have a totally different target audience. Also don’t make your decision based on 1 post of your ideal client. Do some research: how do they communicate to their clients, which platforms do they use and how?

Where does your client hangout?

Want to have successful social media platforms? Find out how and where your dream client, your customers communicate. Do some research! Because no matter how useful your posts are, if your clients hang out on a different platform, they’ll never see it. If your customers have to put in a lot of effort to find you, they won’t.

Whether your clients are companies or private persons: find out where they hangout. Not only online, but also in day-to-day life. Do your market research. Cringing at the very thought? Relax. It is easier than you think! Here are some pointers:

  1. Go to network meetings. Sign up for events. In person and online.
    • Network meeting of people in the same profession as you? Ask where and how they find their customers. Which channels do they use? Which do they find most successful?
    • Found a (network) meeting or event your ideal customers go to? Great! Ask them which social media platforms they like and use most for their business. Ask them what they find annoying online, and what they find useful. Bonus: ask them about their favorite restaurant etc. Handy for taglines.
  2. Imagine you are your ideal client. How does (s)he look like? Where does (s)he work, shop, hangout. You often know more about your ideal client than you think. Use that knowledge.
  3. There is so much info you can find on customer behavior. For instance, if your clients are outdoor brands: Where do they but also their customers like to shop? Do they shop more local, international, online? Check out these stores and find out what platforms they use. Do they have a newsletter or actual info bord in the store? Maybe you can get a spot.
  4. Are you already on social media with your business? Analyze! Which messages got the most views, which the most reactions. Have multiple channels? Which one does better? (Just started? Realize social media platforms take time to grow).
Understand your customer

Use the above points to determine which social media platform is best for you to be able to attract customers. Linkedin is always a perfect platform for your online resume. Companies will often check you out on this platform. But it depends on your customers if Linkedin is useful for more. If your customers don’t use it to communicate anything else, don’t do it either. Use the platforms they use, that way they will not only be able to find you, but also have a feeling you understand them and speak their ‘language’.

Happy communicating! Nadine.

Zakelijke binding versus klantenbinding

Happy communicating!
